 dichondra

Dichondra (or ear of mouse) is not really a lawn, but a trim ground cover for full sun in cool coastal climates, or shady spots inland.

Dichondra loves the conditions between stepping stones, sending it roots toward the cool moist soil underneath the stones, and pointing its tiny, lily pad-like leaves toward the sun.

In some places dichondra, a low growing plant and member of the morning glory family, is seen as a weed. In other places, however, it is valued as an attractive ground cover or even a substitute for a small lawn area.

Dichondra (Dichondra repens) is a perennial ground cover plant that has a somewhat upright, creeping habit with circular leaves. It is not usually over 2 inches in height and retains its bright green colour in temperatures as low as 25 F. (-3 C.).

When this ground cover becomes full, it appears as a dense carpet-like grass and is often planted in places where other turf-type grass does not grow well.

Proper preparation of the seedbed is essential to growing dichondra plants. A weed-free raked area is best. Dichondra prefers loose, clod-free and well-drained soil in partial shade to full sun.

Once plants are established, a deep and infrequent watering is necessary. It is best to allow the plants to dry out slightly between watering. If using as a lawn alternative, the dichondra can be mowed to a suitable height. Most people find that mowing to around 1 ½ inches in the summer is best and requires cutting every two weeks.

All dichondras spread by runners and fill in fast for lawn areas. A healthy lawn consisting entirely of Dichondra is fairly difficult to start, grow, and maintain. It could be the challenge of the summer!

A nitrogen high lawn fertilizer is recommended

Delivery

The small plug plants will be dispatched by first class post in an envelope with moist tissue. I'll pick the plants on the day you purchase and put them straight in the post. Please allow an extra day from the estimate on the postage page as the package is coming from Northern Ireland.

Please open the pack as soon as they are delivered. It is important to take the plants out of the container on delivery as they could rot with the lack of air circulation.

They might look a bit stressed but will soon pick up when planted.

Quality Assured

If you have any problems with the plants or need any more advice about planting or aftercare please contact me.

The plants will be picked, packed and shipped on the same day, usually the day you order (if it's still light).

First Class delivery and recycled packaging is included in the price. The last posting of the week will be Thursday evening then I'll resume on the Monday morning. this will ensure the plants don't sit in the sorting office for too long.

Plants will vary slightly from the images.

I offer a money back guarantee if the plants don't arrive in good condition. Please send me a photograph of the plants and the postal arrival date for my quality assurance.
