Protecting your fruit trees and bushes Growing fruit is an extremely satisfying annual pursuit. There are certain pruning and feeding regimes to follow to ensure that all of your hard work isn’t in vain. It’s a good idea to protect the fruit against pests. Protecting the fruit against soil borne pests and insects is helped considerably by offering healthy soil to the shrubs and trees and keeping the area around the fruit clean and tidy to deter pests that hide. Mulching and feeding with organic plant foods such as comfrey or nettle juice helps, and of course introducing slug protection for ground fruit like strawberries. Protecting soft fruit such as raspberries, blackcurrants, gooseberries and strawberries from birds requires a different approach. The organic philosophy is based upon promoting biodiversity and establishing harmonious relationships with nature. Therefore we need to make sure the birds are kept away from our ripe fruit but do not get harmed in the process. Using Fruit Cages Wire and nylon mesh netting are both suitable for protecting organic fruit crops. Many organic fruit growers rely on permanent fruit cage structures with removable netting to protect their vines, apples, pears, plums and peaches. This enables an effective barrier to be established immediately prior to crop ripening. During the remainder of the year, the netting can be removed to enable birds to move freely about the trees and bushes. Bees and other creatures that feed on potentially destructive insects and larvae also have a free run. Without their assistance, many cross pollinating species struggle to bear fruit, and among those which do, the likelihood of insect related crop damage is significantly increased. All of the mesh sizes for the products below are small enough to keep the pests out but allow beneficial insects in should they be left permanently in place.
